Morgan silver dollars The Morgan dollar was designed by George T. Morgan.  Around 657,000,000 Morgan silver dollars were minted and hundreds of millions were melted since then.  The Pittman Act of 1918 recalled over 270 million silver dollars for melting, and the Silver Act of 1942 contributed to the demise of many more.  During the 'silver boom' of 1979-1980 silver rose to around the $50 an ounce and many more were melted.

It is estimated that only 15-17% of the Morgan silver dollars minted still exist today.
